Transform Your Leadership: The Power of Embracing Vulnerability

Reader,

In our journey toward success, there's a subtle yet profound aspect that often goes unexplored but has the potential to transform our professional and personal relationships profoundly. This aspect is enduring vulnerability—those deep-seated sensitivities rooted in our earlier experiences that continue to shape our reactions and interactions throughout our careers and lives.

As leaders and changemakers, recognizing and embracing these vulnerabilities can turn our perceived weaknesses into sources of strength. Here are some common vulnerabilities you might recognize:

  • The sting of feeling excluded or sidelined.
  • The habit of taking remarks or outcomes personally.
  • Over-analyzing shifts in team dynamics or behavior.
  • Yearning for overt demonstrations of loyalty or commitment.
  • Hesitating to place trust in others.

Let me share a personal anecdote to illustrate this better. During my teenage years, a student a year or two ahead of me didn't like that I was speaking up for myself so she shamed me in front of my peers and slapped me across the face and I froze in that moment. In time I forgot about it but gradually it led me to silence my own voice to avoid judgment. This experience followed me into my professional life, where I found myself hesitating to speak up, fearing criticism.

Here’s how I addressed this vulnerability:

  • I learned to recognize the automatic responses that were stealing my choices.
  • I retrained my nervous system to release the automatic reaction into "fight, flight or freeze" mode.
  • I developed a plan for learning to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
  • I found practices that supported my body, mind and spirit.
  • I allowed myself to become the most powerful version of myself.

If you ever find yourself overwhelmed in a triggered moment, I recommend excusing yourself from the situation and counting to ten backward while touching your thumb to the tip of each finger in turn. Return only when you feel composed and ready to engage constructively.

Understanding and managing our vulnerabilities not only enhances our leadership but also deepens our connections, fostering a culture of empathy and resilience within our teams.
